Our
lockout has passed the 8th month, and we have seen no light at the
end of the tunnel, not even a glimmer. Our local along with the CEP have worked hard to end this conflict
to no avail. Our local cannot say enough about the help and
resources provided by the National union so far. We have changed conciliators and spokespersons at the negotiating table without results. Petro-Canada
does not want to end this lockout without big concessions. They have stated very matter of factly that they have deep pockets and are willing to go as long as
needed to get what they want. Upper management is supporting this war with one
goal in mind, to put an end to National Bargaining. If our local is going to
win this battle, to put it bluntly, if we need to fight for the National
Bargaining Program our local needs more monetary aid from the Energy sector and
the CEP National union as a whole.
We have to raise the bar higher nationally and locally. If we lose this fight, we can all kiss the program goodbye. There is so much at
stake for our younger members in this fight and not just the ones in our local, but across the country. They are the future of our union. We cannot
let them down. This
fight has become national in scale and more importantly, it is not merely about
our pattern but about the the very survival of
unionism in Canada. Rest assured Management in every sector
throughout the country is watching, looking to see if the time is right to
challenge the unions. If it is clear that we do not stand united, we will all lose
in the end.
